GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 689967
Use the super key for system keyboard shortcuts
Last modified: 2021-05-25 12:42:34 UTC
This is a tracking bug. GNOME 3 uses the super key (often known as the windows or meta key) for system shortcuts (as opposed to application shortcuts). This avoids interference between system and application shortcut schemas and creates a clear pattern for people to follow. Some system level shortcuts use the super key. Others are still using legacy keyboard shortcut combinations. As a first step, we should ensure that all system level shortcuts can be accessed using a <super> modififier key combination, and we should update the documentation to recommend these new keyboard shortcuts. The old keyboard shortcuts should be left in place for now - this bug is only about adding new shortcuts at this stage.

Reassigning to gnome-shell maintainers, they're the ones that will have to update the default shortcuts.
Florian, what do you want to do with this?
Hello, gnome-shell developers...
As far as I can see, bug 746945 is the only shortcut mentioned on the wiki page that hasn't been added/changed. There are still a number of compositor shortcuts that aren't using super, but most of them are fairly fringe: - switch system controls (a.k.a. a11y switcher) - various cycle shortcuts (like super+tab, super+`etc., but without showing the pop) - show main menu (just another alias for super/super+s nowadays) - toggle maximized (we do have super-based shortcuts for maximize and unmaximize) - being-move/resize I'm not sure it's worth looking for alternative shortcuts for those. Then there are two remaining shortcuts that are probably a bit more common: - the alt+f2 run dialog - closing a window with alt+f4 I figure something like super+w would make sense for the last one?
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new enhancement request ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gsettings-desktop-schemas/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
