Description wim sturkenboom 2012-11-21 08:52:56 UTC
Please bear with me, this is my first bug report here. I apologise for any missing information or even if this is specific for my operating system (Ubuntu 12.04). I did check for duplicates though ;)

When choosing 'properties' from the context menu, the properties dialog shows and next Nautilus hangs. One can not close the properties dialog nor can one close the file browser window.

This problem occurs with a variety of RAW image formats; DNG, PEF, CR2, ... Sample files can be found on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1043614

As 'file properties' is a 'core' functionality for Nautilus (in my opinion), I have given it a higher severity.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. It's well reported, no apologies needed. :)

I cannot reproduce this bug. I tested the sample files with nautilus 3.6.3, on Fedora 18, but it does not hang.

Thanks for the feedback; I thought this report died a quiet death. Did you try the sample files from the link I provided?

OOPS, I must learn to read; sorry for that. Which version of Nautilus?
Comment 4 André Klapper 2013-01-28 17:55:08 UTC
Please run nautilus in gdb - see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace for your specific distribution.
Comment 5 William Jon McCann 2013-01-29 07:39:01 UTC
I think RAW uses the tiff gdk pixbuf loader which isn't threadsafe. Also see #449409
Comment 6 Tobias Mueller 2013-05-06 23:14:05 UTC
So is this is bug on our side?
Comment 7 Lonnie Best 2013-11-12 17:22:58 UTC
When I right lick on a file, in Nautilus, and then click properties, I'm experiencing a great deal of lag before the properties are displayed.

It doesn't matter if the file is small or large; it takes about 10 seconds before the properties are displayed, and the Nautilus window becomes dim during the wait.

I've noticed this behavior since upgrading from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10, and have never experienced it prior (using the exact same hardware).

dbench says my solid state hard drive's speed is over 400 MB/sec

sudo apt-get install dbench ; dbench 4

   4 16672 426.89 MB/sec warmup 1 sec latency 14.404 ms
   4 35634 418.37 MB/sec warmup 2 sec latency 11.449 ms
   4 54492 412.88 MB/sec warmup 3 sec latency 9.392 ms
   4 72852 409.45 MB/sec warmup 4 sec latency 11.530 ms
   4 91399 406.85 MB/sec warmup 5 sec latency 11.072 ms
   4 110254 407.92 MB/sec warmup 6 sec latency 12.197 ms

My hard drive is very capable of pulling a file's properties quickly, so I'm reporting this as a bug in Nautilus (where I'm experiencing this issue).

Perhaps the title of this bug report should be:
"Nautilus hangs when opening the properties dialog"

instead of:
"Nautilus hangs when opening the properties dialog on RAW image files"

I've yet to find any file-type (or folder) that doesn't hang for 10 or 15 seconds.

Is this bug report too specific to cover my issue, or should another report be created to address the broader affect we are experiencing downstream?

I this it is safest to report a new bug. As you say, this one seems to be too specific. If they end up being the same, we can always mark as duplicates later.
Comment 10 William Jon McCann 2013-11-23 15:07:00 UTC
Can you link to one of the files that reproduce the problem? Most if not all of these pixbuf loader threadsafe problems have been fixed in more recent versions.

Comment 12 James A. Bunke 2014-07-18 18:08:49 UTC
I submitted bug 726789 which also concerns the nautilus 3.10.1 window becoming
non-responsive after selecting Properties for a variety of filetypes using
Fedora 20. I have not noticed any tardiness in the pop up of the file actions
window until Properties is selected after which the window stops and requires either the window or the underlying nautilus process to be killed. As of the
current date this behavior has not changed and prevents this method for correcting the "file association" to use an appropriate tool for accessing the file when nautilus is requested to open it...

I added this comment to tie in the fact that it is not just related to Ubuntu...

I can't reproduce this either with the provided files nor with my own CR2 files on Fedora 25/Nautilus 3.22. Are you still experiencing the issue on your side?
