GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 688721
Quantization noise (?) when playing back mp3 files
Last modified: 2013-03-06 09:53:19 UTC
Created attachment 229470 [details] This quiet clip plays correctly in iTunes etc, but with the GStreamer engine (Clementine) there's additional noise. I initially reported this to Clementine Player developers, but they referred me here, as Clementine apparently uses the GStreamer audio engine (Audio Sink OSX) for playback. When I play back any quiet MP3 with Clementine, I get a lot of additional noise, which I don't get when playing it back through, say, iTunes or QuickTime Player. This noise sounds like quantisation noise, but it is not in the file. I've attached a short mp3 clip of quiet piano music (the beginning of For Bunita Marcus by Morton Feldman), which plays back normally in most media players, but not with the GStreamer audio engine (i.e. when I use Clementine), with which there is very noticeable additional noise.
Created attachment 229471 [details] Here the Feldman.mp3 is played back first through iTunes (clean) and then Clementine (noisy)
Sounds good to me, I don't get the noise from the second attachment. Can you paste the output of this (assuming 0.10) gst-launch-0.10 playbin2 uri=file:///home/wim/data/Feldman.mp3 -v
