GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 688593
Text tool, Help: Sans Serif fonts are rendered as serif fonts
Last modified: 2013-11-05 17:34:50 UTC
Created attachment 229295 [details] Demonstration How to reproduce: 1. Start the Text tool. 2. In the Text tool options dialog select "MS Sans Serif" or "Sans". 3. Type the text. Expected result: The text is rendered in the selected font without serifs. Actual result: The text is rendered in "MS Serif" font. It doesn't happen with other Sans related fonts ("Sans Bold", "Sans Bold Italic" and "Sans Italic"). See attachment. It happens always. The official 2.8.2 build is fine, but at least the stable nightly build from 6.10.2012 (if not earlier) until the latest nightly build from 17.11.2012 have this problem. I thought copying font libraries (libfreetype-6.dll, libpango-1.0-0.dll, libpangocairo-1.0-0.dll, libpangoft2-1.0-0.dll, libpangowin32-1.0-0.dll and libfontconfig-1.dll) from the working 2.8.2 build and refreshing the font cache would solve this problem, but it didn't.
Closing as the official 2.8.2 build is fine and there's a separate bugtracker for the nightly builds (https://github.com/drawoc/windows-gimp-jhbuild/issues).

Confirming this bug for the official and latest GIMP 2.8.6/Win build from Jernej. Also the help is affected: all the regular text written in Sans now appears in Serif (I used the online help from within GIMP). Output of 'gimp-2.8 -v': GEGL Version 0.2.0 (gebaut gegen Version 0.2.0) GLib Version 2.36.1 (gebaut gegen Version 2.36.1) GdkPixbuf Version 2.28.0 (gebaut gegen Version 2.28.0) GTK+ Version 2.24.18 (gebaut gegen Version 2.24.18) Pango Version 1.34.0 (gebaut gegen Version 1.34.0) Fontconfig Version 2.10.92 (gebaut gegen Version 2.10.92) Cairo Version 1.10.2 (gebaut gegen Version 1.10.2) See also the reported bug at the URL in comment 2 and the related commits.
MS Sans Serif is a bitmap fonts. That kind of font is supposed to fall back to a default (MS Serif is a bitmap font as well, I got fooled by that one for a few minutes). Sans appear to be broken, Mono too, but theses are fontconfig aliases to actual fonts (Arial and Courier New, iirc). Most likely Serif is broken as well, that would require reassignment of that alias to a different font to check, though. P.S. the non-deprecated aliases sans-serif and monospace seem to be broken as well.
Hi, I tested. This is the exact same issue as bug 708110. That is that the fonts.conf file is wrong on our 2.8.6 release, so a whole bunch of various configuration files can't be loaded. In bug 708110, that was about simulating italic and bold, here that's the conf for aliasing sans. They are both fixed the same way. Please edit: c:\Program Files\Gimp 2\etc\fonts\fonts.conf (or wherever else it is installed, but that's the default path) You'll find one configuration path in it, a long one, ending in conf.d. Delete all the path but the "conf.d" part, save the file, restart GIMP. We'll make sure this configuration file is fixed in the next release. Setting as a duplicate. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 708110 ***
Hi, sorry to tell you, but this bug (hence the configuration file) is not fixed in 2.8.8 Also, what exactly do I have to delete within the fonts conf file to fix it by myself?
You're commenting on a bug that has been resolved as the duplicate of a different one. Jehan has mentioned what to fix: > You'll find one configuration path in it, a long one, ending in conf.d. Delete > all the path but the "conf.d" part, save the file, restart GIMP.
