RFE: separate option to skip confirmation when closing exported images
Last modified: 2012-11-06 22:00:45 UTC
This is a compromise to reduce pain for people with a JPG- or PNG-oriented workflow without going back from the new design for Save vs. Export. Right now: a) there is an option for "Confirm closing of unsaved images", checked by default b) When closing an unsaved image, there is a note saying if it's been exported. The addition of "b" is a big help from how it was before, but can we go one step further and For what I'm doing, I've got originals elsewhere and can recreate if need be; I rarely want to actually save in native format. So this either adds an extra step with each file, or else removes the safety for closing worked-on images completely. If we could have an additional option in the preferences to "Skip confirmation when image has been exported", I think everyone could be happy.
I'm sorry, but this has been discussed in various mailing list threads and bugs. We decided it's not going to happen.
Really? I understand not having it as a default, but it seems just punitive to not even make it an option.
The *entire* point of the save/export separation is to prevent data loss. Adding such an option would mean adding an "Enable data loss" button. We really discussed this to death already :)
That argument seems upside down! Right now, we have the only the option of checking ""Confirm closing of unsaved images". In that case, clicking close on an un-exported image will indeed lose all the work. The argument for an intermediate option is simple: 1. For people with an XCF-based workflow, for example for graphic design or significant image construction, the export should not count as saving. Current behavior is fine. 2. For people with a JPG/PNG-based workflow (trivial image-touch up, minor editing, but probably of a lot of photos), export means "done", and the only thing lost is basically undo history. It's fine for workflow #1 to be the default, but why not have the option of supporting the second workflow too? *Neither* workflow wants "confirm closing of unsaved images" completely off.
"Confirm closing of unsaved images" has been removed from git master already, and we're not going to add another such option. Sorry for the briefness, but please check the mailing list archives for megabytes of arguments, all has been said already.
You might think that those "megabytes of arguments" would represent something worth listening to. It's not a gratuitous option: it represents two legitimate but different workflows which Gimp could support easily.
I guess the final argument is: as a user, I want to control my own workflow, and not have it thrust upon me by my software. Improvements to the UI are welcome, but forcing a workflow on me with the twisted logic of saving me from myself (the cry of "data loss") just isn't constructive.
Maybe, maybe not. But not in bugzilla, please discuss this on the mailing list.
