Very often windows names, document names or .desktop files are truncated because too long to display otherwise.

This renders the partial names sometimes challenging. 

It would be ideal if the full name was displayed when the mouse is over the icon or the text.

No, it would be ideal to solve the issue in a way that does not depend on a pointer - there's some discussion already in bug 663725.
