The initial chat window is very small (around 322x364). The attached screenshot shows how it looks on a 1920x1080 screen.

I'm not sure what we considerer lower-end-spectrum for screens running GNOME, but 1024x600 is the screen with the lowest resolution running GNOME in this household (2 year old netbook).
