Prior to upgrading to quantal, Empathy had a compact mode for the contacts list. This would show each contact on a single line that was just tall enough to display the contact's username. This way, I would be able to use my high resolution monitor to view all of my online contacts simultaneously.

Under Empathy 3.6 on quantal, the option for a compact mode disappeared and each contact in the list takes about 3 times the vertical space needed to display the contact's username. Now even with my high resolution montor, I can only view about 1/3 of my online contacts at a time.

Please bring back the compact mode.

I too found this to be a problem when testing a GNOME 3.6 Live CD. It actually makes the contacts list far less useful.

Our company appends people's telephone extension numbers to their names, so we can use the contact list as a quick way to lookup people's extensions. Doing so takes considerably more scrolling, and is therefore much less convenient, without Compact Mode.

Found this quite annoying as well.

Useful options to reduce size of window:
- option to set font size used to display user names
- be able to set size of user avatars
- ability turn of display of avatars completely
- or a 'compact' option, if above controls are too fine-grained.
