GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 687164
Changing folders from the location bar is slow
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:17:24 UTC
Problem: Changing folder by clicking on the buttons in the path bar is slow and results in a unsatisfactory user experience. How to reproduce: Open a sub-folder, e.g. /Home/Downloads. Two buttons appear in the path bar: Home and Downloads. Moving between the two folders results in a noticeable delay of about 1.5 seconds. I notice that a fade in/out animation occurs in both buttons (giving the appearance of a transition). The end of the animation coincides with when the folder list is refreshed. By comparison, switching folder by clicking on open tabs is more snappy and responsive. Still, the overall experience is that even switching tabs has a noticeable delay (~0.5 s; the delay is independent of the number of files in the opened folder and thumbnails has been turned off). Platform: Ubuntu 12.10 Gnome 3.6 Nautilus/Files 3.6.1
Tab switching should be instantaneous. This looks like a general performance issue.
(In reply to comment #1) > Tab switching should be instantaneous. This looks like a general performance > issue. I have since my original report upgraded to Files 3.6.3. Tab switching is now faster, practically instantaneous. Still, however, there is a noticeable delay when switching between tabs using the buttons in the path bar. It is faster than is was pre-3.6.3 but still takes about 0.5 - 1.0 sec to switch. So no, this is not a general performance issue. There is a discernible difference in speed when switching tabs by clicking on the tabs themselves versus clicking on the buttons in the path bar.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
