GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 687056
Enable simple batch renaming
Last modified: 2016-08-29 20:45:06 UTC
It would be nice if nautilus had a possibility to mass rename files ie by selecting many files and then pressing f2 or clicking renaming in the menu. The typed name would be followed by an consecutively number. At the moment the menu item is just greyed out which isn't very intuitive.
The option will actually be enabled for multiple files if there's a "bulk rename tool" installed and set up (using the org.gnome.nautilus.preferences bulk-rename-tool GSetting). I am not sure we should provide a way to rename multiple files directly from Nautilus.
Well, while I totally understand that I should install and use a new tool if my problem is a "special interest thing". But in this case it just would be a problem like "oh, I wan't to rename my holiday pictures". I thought that it would be cool if nautilus could help to solve simple problems. While a rename functionality is inbuilt it would just improve it in a simple way.
While it is nicely hidden, bulk renaming is a common enough task that it seems as though it should just be included. Both explorer and finder include such a tool.
