When you select a file to open, preview images creates too long and the mouse cursor shakes

What it "too long". GIMP has to open the image and make a thumbnail
out of it, there is no other way. You can disable thumbnail creation
in preferences.

This seems to be a duplicate of bug #683152 (especially comment #7).
Can you confirm this? At [1] you find a workaround for this.
