Description:
Don't know what happened.  Had just doen a web search "news" and selected a news package to see the details of.  The system hung except for the mouse would still move.  I wasn't able to change focus, change workspaces... nuttin'.  I had to telnet in from another box and kill the gnorpm process in order to get control of the system back.
