Description Jeremy Bicha 2012-10-17 13:13:04 UTC
Consider using GtkLevelBar to add an indicator for available capacity ("free space remaining") to devices in the side bar as seen in this mockup: http://twitpic.com/ay5c6c

With either small removable media (which generally have limited storage capacity) or partitions that were probably created too small, it's important that users have an idea how much space is free for adding more files. I think users of SSDs or tablets would be especially interested in this feature.

This feature or something similar to it would be really handy now that Files has dropped the status bar which used to be able to be enabled to show somewhat of an indicator. Currently, you need to right-click on or in a folder and click Properties (then wait) to see the free space remaining on that partition.

Hey Jeremy. This is a cool idea, but it seems like a bit of a distraction. There will be many cases where that information won't be interesting, and the bars are quite visually prominent.

CC'ing Jon and Cosimo to get a second opinion.

I also think having the level bars always prominently displayed like that is a bit too much. Also, these days, Baobab does a much better job of showing an overview of the free space available on connected devices.

I'm not going to open Baobab to tell how much free space is available on my USB stick when all I want to do is move some files to it.

Nautilus 3.4 had a handy status bar for this. Maybe bring that feature back as a floating status bar?

Which status bar do you mean, Jeremy? You can still see free space in the properties dialog...

I think I don't really understand why you need to know the available space before attempting a move; we have free space checks in place, to avoid starting file operations if we know they're going to fail. Why is that not enough?
