GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 685188
Limited File Saving Format GIMP 2.8
Last modified: 2012-10-01 08:37:17 UTC
It appears that GIMP can't save images in the .png format, which supports transparency, and is essential for those individuals wanting to use these in their website design logos. GIMP can only save as xcf, xcf.bz2, bz2, xcfbz2, xcf.gz, gz and xcfgz formats. You can't save in the jpeg format. In previous versions of GIMP, there were more extensions available. I even went into Windows Explorer and changed the xcf extension to png and tried to open it using Microsoft Paint, but that didn't work. I then went back to Windows Explorer and changed the png extension to the xcf extension and found out that Microsoft Paint can't open it either. I then tried to use Internet Explorer 9 to open the xcf file expecting just the image to show, but instead the entire GIMP application with all three of its windows opened (toolbox, image, and the right box). GIMP 2.6 allowed you to save an image using many different choices. I'm probably better off paying several hundred dollars to purchase Photoshop, which has much fewer problems.
