Description Bastien Nocera 2012-08-28 10:59:03 UTC
(or translatable?)

$ LC_ALL=fr_FR.UTF-8 gnome-control-center sound

Still shows "Analog Stereo Output" as a name, "Built-In Audio" as a description, and "Headphones" as a connector.
Comment 1 David Henningsson 2012-08-28 11:05:03 UTC
These names are coming from PulseAudio - as such you need to also start PulseAudio with LC_ALL=fr_FR.UTF-8 for these names to be translated (assuming PulseAudio translation for those strings are up-to-date).
Comment 2 Bastien Nocera 2012-08-28 17:51:41 UTC
That's most bizarre. A remote PulseAudio, running on a NAS for example, in the en_US locale would give me some items in the current locale (French in the example), mixed in with US English from the remote PA.

Is there a way to force PulseAudio to give us untranslated names and translate them ourselves using the PulseAudio domain?

That way, we're certain that all the strings are in the user's language, not mixed in like that.
Comment 3 Matthias Clasen 2012-08-30 01:00:31 UTC
run pulseaudio in LC_ALL=C ?
Comment 4 David Henningsson 2012-08-30 21:40:52 UTC
There is no good way currently, AFAIK - but I'm not a translation expert.

The strings are read and translated at PulseAudio startup. If you run it with LC_ALL=C you're not getting translation for any other PulseAudio client either (e g pavucontrol).
