From downstream bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/1030316

"
The mail adress like "xx@automaten-Bäumler.de" produce the errormessage

The reported error was "RCPT TO <xx@automaten-bäumler.de> gescheitert: Bad recipient address syntax".
"

When sending email to internationalized domain names, the domain name should be translated to ACE/punycode for sending to the MTA.

this is a dupe of bug #486018 which got fixed and works in my evolution 3.12.9 on Debian. See https://wiki.debian.org/IDN for test addresses.
