As a very heavy user of keyboard shortcuts to the point of almost never touching a pointing device this is a serious inconsistency in my workflow.

Unlike most I like GNOME 3 specifically because of it's shortcut friendly cold bloodedly efficient workflow. This is like the only real issue with it.

Also another suggestion is to offer in the control center an option to possibly integrate the message tray into the top panel so you can see notifications that popped up while you were away as opposed to having to check manually either through a hot corner or pressing Super.

There's been a lot of discussion about this and I think there are some re-design efforts going on to address this. Most of the discussion is in bug 641723 I think.
