The select button does not quite line up with the search entry above it.

The glade file in panels/common/language-chooser.ui has no padding or margin whatsoever for the action area.
Either we need to replace the GtkButtonBox, or remove the padding on it somehow.

going off-balance.

Are you sure you installed the updated UI files? I just tried again and it seems to work fine here.
