GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 677829
Program Hangs Constantly
Last modified: 2018-06-29 23:09:03 UTC
When I open the "Transfer" category drop-down box while viewing a register, the list does drop down but trying to slide the scroll-bar up or down with the mouse or keyboard causes the program to lock up...for about 60 seconds, and then I try it again. The window should scroll downwards or upwards depending upon it's location. Scrolled content should be selected. (Or, at least, the application should not crash.) I've also noticed that when I mistakenly move to another register entry before saving the previous entry, a window pops up to ask me about this but it is blank and when I try to close it out, it locks up the program as well, for another 60 seconds or so. While using the program, I've noticed all pop up windows do the same thing...they come up blank and then lock up the program. After playing around with them, I can get them to finally display the information they are telling me but, even then, the buttons will lock up the program if clicked on. attached is the trace file: * 13:57:39 WARN <qof.engine> [guid_init()] only got 2011 bytes. The identifiers might not be very random. * 13:57:46 WARN <gnc.app-utils> Could not spawn perl: Failed to execute child process (No such file or directory) I'm not sure if this file describes what I am posting, in that this trace file message says the same thing right after I start the program...before I do anything! Other than that, the program works just fine...so far! (This copy was built from svn r22003 on 2012-02-11.) Thanks
I noticed this issue occurs on my Windows 7 Professional 64bit esp. on the transfer function in the Account Register. Am unable ot use this for many many minutes. This copy was built from svn r22268 on 2012-07-15.
Yes, the transfer function is one of the places where I see the problem as well. I notice when the drop-down box opens up, I can see all the accounts available but, when I try to scroll up or down, mouse or keyboard, the box freezes and I get a "Program Not Responding" message in the program Title Bar for about a minute. I can get it to work "sometimes", if I just use the keyboard to scroll up or down very slowly.
Well, I've now upgraded to a new version, (svn r22925 on 2013-04-21) and still have the same issues! Does ANYONE have any idea as to what the problem is?
OK...now I think I've figured out the problem. The Gnucash package I downloaded came with a theme selection program. After I first installed Gnucash, everything was working fine. Once I changed the theme is when I started getting the "No Response" issue, especially with pop-ups and scrolling through accounts in the "Transfere" column of my registers. I recently changed to another theme and now Gnucash works great! It seems that some themes will not work effectively. I think you can mark this problem as "Solved"!
Thank you for reporting your solution as well ! Just for reference for others that may experience the same issue, can you add the names of the good and bad themes you played with ? It would be useful common knowledge. Thanks.
Well, I couldn't exactly tell you which theme I had been using while having these issues but, I do know the theme I'm using now that works is called "Unity"! Since the theme is something that most people just set and leave, I don't see too many memorizing or even being that familiar with all the themes available. I also noticed, and it could be just me, but it seemed as though when I updated Gnucash to a newer version, additional themes were listed! Sorry I couldn't be more specific..but I just found this out by accident. If others are having the same issues, I would suggest trying different themes to see if the problems clear up.
Roger, thanks for your feedback. I have added a small note on our Windows wiki page based on your observations: http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Windows#Program_hangs_constantly
Reassign version to 2.4.x so that individual 2.4 versions can be retired.
