GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 676545
export+import functionality
Last modified: 2012-08-27 19:02:56 UTC
It would be nice if baobab had an export+import functionality. Then e.g. my provider could show me where exactly the space on my backup goes, without me needing to have access to the backup filesystem. The "save screenshot" functionality is already a start, but i would love to be able to browse it using the normal baobab gui.
I don't understand. What exactly would export and import do, and how would they behave? What kind of provider? webspace? internet access? How is your backup related to your provider?
export would export the filetree info to a file. import would read that info into baobab, so that the user can browse the file info as if it were on a machine he has access to. The example is about a webspace provider. We have a couple of servers there, and they do backups of those servers for us. One major cost factor is the backup facilty. We do not have direct access to that filesystem. So the example is that they could make a baobab export and send it to me. Then i could see where the space goes. A second use case is a DTAP environment where you don't have (root) access to a server, and need info about where the storage space goes. Well, any situation where you need the info but do not have (root) access to the file system. Then, third, it might be useful for some to archive the info about filesystem usage for later reference. And a third use case, at the danger of discrediting myself by giving a weak argument through which stronger arguments may be ignored: it would become possible to use baobab as a viewer for hierarchical data. I have a database with a tree (or folder) structure, the folders are linked (contain) with varying amounts of records. I would welcome it to view that kind of data too, i would produce a file in the import format. But like i said, that would be a side-effect that need not be considered in the design. Oh sheesh. I just found a bug with the same question that seems to have been solved. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=633293 Sorry for not searching before reporting a bug.
