Description Vanessa Dannenberg 2012-05-03 20:51:04 UTC
The new text-entry-on-canvas feature has one major misfeature - there's no way to move the overlay off of my image window. Depending on the size of the image and the zoom level, this overlay can obscure the *entire* image, pretty much wrecking the usefulness of this new feature, especially if you're adding text near the bottom edge of the image (if I can't see the text on the canvas while I'm adding it, what's the point?)

I should be able to choose the "use editor" option and have *all* of the content of this overlay moved into that dialog. No overlay should be present in that mode.

Not only is the options overlay obscuring almost half of the 64x64 pixel example image, it is cut off on the right because of the window size, and it's difficult to read thanks to the alpha effect it uses.

Screenshot with two partial text overlay windows
Comment 3 GrafxUser 2012-06-17 18:29:44 UTC
Confirming this for the Windows and Mac OS X builds of 2.8.
How to reproduce:
1. zoom into the image to make it bigger than the viewport
2. choose Text tool
3. place the text very close to the upper or right border of the viewport, that is close to the rulers or the vertical scrollbar

This should happen:
The text overlay window should appear on a place aside the text, where it is fully visible.

This actually happens:
The text overlay window always appears on the top of the text. This can cause it to be (partially or fully) invisible. See attached merge of two screenshots.

It happens always.

The code to position the overlay so it is always visible is planned,
but not implemented yet.

Has there been any progress on this?

A temporary way to avoid this is zooming out, changing some settings and then zooming in again.

it doesn't seem. I have v. 2.8.18 and AFAIK i noticed that the text tool overlay stays on the image and there is no way to move it outside.I noticed this problem as i was experiencing a crash of gimp with this tool which i reported. It's https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=792168
