GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 675124
Provide an app menu
Last modified: 2018-05-24 13:09:29 UTC
There's an ongoing effort in GNOME to ensure that applications provide a consistent set of items in their app menus. See: https://live.gnome.org/GnomeGoals/PortToGMenu It would be great if the GIMP could be consistent with other GNOME apps in this regard. Suggested app menu format: Preferences Input Devices Keyboard Shortcuts Modules Units --- Help About GIMP Quit Each of these items can be moved from their current positions, except perhaps Help (where it might make sense to have a duplicate entry in the Help menu itself).
Out of curiosity, what would "Modules" and "Units" provide?
Why do you suggest to put some of the least frequently used menu items there? What's the purpose of this menu?
Hey Michael, An app menu is intended to be the place for global application menu items - items that apply globally to the whole app rather than specific windows or documents. This is the same role that they play on OS X. App menus provide a good place for items that don't logically fit into existing menus (eg. 'Quit' under 'File'). In GNOME we are migrating all our applications to make use of the app menu, so that they become a consistent presence across the desktop.
Please implement a fallback menu that makes sense for those who don't use GNOME Shell. The default fallback app menu is an usability disaster. It shouldn't be on ANY application.
This will be addressed when we finish the port to gtk3, and is actually an enhancement.
