Description Allan Day 2012-04-21 16:47:36 UTC
In the long run it would be good to drop Nautilus's menu bar altogether. A good first step will be to move some basic items to the app menu. This will help with consistency between different GNOME apps.

Suggested app menu format:

New Window

Connect to Server...

Preferences

About Files

Quit

Not sure if throwing away 80% of the options makes sense for an application which has that many usecases as a file manager.

I'm not suggesting that we remove the menu bar right now. (That will require a more thorough redesign.) This bug only requests that we move some items to the app menu.

I now pushed an implementation of the proposed layout to git master.
The implementation takes care to disable the corresponding menu items from the traditional menubar only in case the app menu is actually showing, so to preserve the current layout in e.g. fallback mode.

For further improvements on the app menu, please file separate bugs.
