GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 674132
External screen makes Gnome 3 fail to start up and fallback to classic mode
Last modified: 2012-04-15 12:33:12 UTC
When I attach an external screen before gdm comes up, Gnome 3 will always end up in classic mode. Going to gdm and logging in with just the internal netbook screen and then attaching the large screen works flawless and perfect and gets me the same result except that I am now perfectly in normal Gnome shell 3d mode. It is very annoying when using the netbook stationary that I need to log in using the internal screen (which I normally don't use and is closed in this situation) for login and only attach the external screen afterwards. Please fix. It occured to me, and I think that might be related, that gdm always uses both screens even when the internal one is actually closed and inaccessible. The internal graphics of this Eee netbook cannot accelerate both screens at once so I heard - BUT when the fallback gnome starts, it actually only uses the external screen alone (as does the real 3d gnome shell when I start up without external screen, then plug it in later - it switches to purely using the external one), therefore that's a pretty senseless limitation, given it is related at all.
I already reported this one actually ages ago and forgot about it. Sorry for the double-post... but maybe someone should actually consider fixing it. It's really annoying and bites me every time I decide to spend a few days with my laptop in stationary mode. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 657431 ***
