I have a ~/.gstreamer-0.10/ directory in my home directory that contains a single file: registry.x86_64.bin

This should really be somewhere inside XDG_CACHE_HOME (ie: what g_get_user_cache_dir() returns).

I believe this is fixed in 0.11/1.0 (git master branch), but it was decided at the time that we won't change this for 0.10.
