GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 673835
Usenet addresses not accepted
Last modified: 2021-05-19 12:28:18 UTC
Clicking on some Usenet group like `de.comm.provider.usenet` to send a message to it, I get an error saying that is not supported. From `LANG=C evolution`: Could not open link. Der angegebene Ort wird nicht unterstützt. (translation: The provided location is not supported.)
Where do you click on it?
(In reply to comment #1) > Where do you click on it? I open the message In the Newsnet/Usenet folder and it is formatted like a normal email message. And where the email address is normal now there is – expectedly – the newsgroup address. And I click on there. The only way to test this is to configure a Usenet account [1] I guess. Still reproducible in 3.9.5. I see there a header (like To/From/Subject) in the preview panel which reads as: Newsgroups: newsgroup.test and the link targets: news:newsgroup.test Interestingly, hitting "Reply" to the message the Post To header is prefilled with: nntp://user@server:119/newsgroup.test but when I create a new message in the NNTP folder I get Post To: folder://<ugly-account-uid>/newsgroup.test There is truly inconsistency in NNTP handling.

Would it make sense to replace the free-form edit for the "Post-To:" in the composer with a folder selector button? [1] The downside of the change would be able to post only to one news group, not to multiple. I do not know whether it is used. I would then ignore the Newsgroup: in the email (even did not highlight it), and use the current real folder (not a vFolder - bug #585387), and set it as the Post To: value. I know the "Post To:" button offers a folder selection, but I would remove it from it and replace with the aforementioned folder selector button. [1] If you are unsure what kind of button I've on my mind then open any mail account Properties, go to the Defaults tab and see the selector for Drafts, Sent folder and so on.
Hiya, I just switched from Claws to Evolution and wonder how is it that such basic things as generating proper address to post is missing. :-( Most of the mailing lists which I follow I do via Gmane (nntp), so it's quite critical feature for me...therefore, interesting if there is hope to fix it in the nearby future?
Jira has an interesting interface for this sort of thing. Not sure if GTK has anything similar, but it's a combination selection/input box. It has a drop-down button on the right to see all selections. As you start typing the drop down selection list automatically appears and continues to whittle the selections down to only matches of what you are typing. Once you have chosen a value, it gets added to the input box in a box of it's own with an X to remove it if you want and you are then free to add another item, either by pressing the drop down button and choosing one or starting to type again to get the drop down list with your matches. This continues until you have all of the values you desire in the field. Hopefully this was a clear description. If not, I can point you at a Jira installation that you can try for yourself if you like.

I only know that Claws-mail has similar/same thing, iow. selection drop-down box with {To,Cc,Bcc, Newsgroups, Reply-To, Followup-To} options and input box.
The closest, I'm aware of, in the Evolution is the folder selection button, like the one in account properties, in the Default tab, for Sent/Drafts/... folders. It allows only one folder to be selected. Apart of the single folder selection it doesn't allow direct input, thus even it's the closest widget, it's far from the one being described by Brian. Folder->Subscriptions has some filtering functionality, but it's also something different.
Personally, I don't really ever cross-post to multiple groups, so a single group selector would be fine with me, although I am wary of introducing such a limitation. A GTK widget such as I suggested would be really nice, FWIW. It's very useful where it's used in other UIs.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new bug report ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
