When I asked Owen in an email about closing it in Bugzilla a fwe weeks ago, he answered "I can't imagine anyone ever wanting to resurrect that model, so the loss of information in closing things WONTFIX doesn't matter."
Same very likely applies also to Git (plus code will not get lost, just the URL changes).
