In summary, gnome-documents completely fails to function in some locales. At least ko_KR.utf8 and pl_PL.utf8 don't work - starting gnome-documents results in a window with no documents in it.
Running
$ LANG=en_US.utf8 gnome-documents
or
$ LANG=ja_JP.utf8 gnome-documents
works around the problem, but it is hardly a viable solution.
Problem is present in both gnome-documents-0.4.0.1-1.fc17.x86_64 and gnome-documents-0.2.1-1.fc16.x86_64.
