Switch to Ctrl-Shift-J makes "Fit in Window" a two-handed operation
Last modified: 2012-04-15 03:23:05 UTC
Switching between 1:1 pixel-view and fit in window is a frequent operation for me as I do photo retouching. Switching to 1:1 is easy and mnemonic, with the 1 key. With 2.6, going to fit-in-window view was a kind of weird key combo (ctrl-shift-e), but I could easily accomplish it with my left hand with my right hand still on the mouse. With 2.7, the new shortcut is ctrl-shift-j — way over on the other side of the keyboard. That's quite the stretch! For my own system, I've changed this to shift-1 (that is, !), which doesn't appear to be taken. Any chance of making that the default? (I don't really care which color the shed ends up being, but I would like it to be a quick, single-handed shed.)
Alternately, Inkscape uses the number keys as zoom shortcuts like this: 1: Zoom 1:1 2: Zoom 1:2 3: Fit selection to window 4: Fit drawing to window (in inkscape, the drawing can go outside the image size) 5: Fit page to window 6: Fit page width to window (roughly like fill window in gimp) I realize that the multiple pixel levels are more useful in Gimp than Inkscape, but having greater UI correspondence between the two tools would be a feature in itself.
Sorry, we can't satisfy everybody's favorite "one hand shortcut" needs, and this will definitely not change for 2.8. Please discuss it on the mailing list, but I'm really reluctant to repeatedly change shortcuts.
That's a reasonable reluctance; it seems like it's important to make any changes before the final 2.8 release. In this case, the suggested shift-1 isn't used by anything else, and so seems a natural choice. I'll bring this up on the mailing list.
