mockup for when no contact is selected

When a contact isn't selected, the right hand pane is greyed out with an icon superimposed. A bit of explanatory text would help to make it clear why the pane is blank.

I've attached a mockup by Matthew Solle with a suggested text and layout.

This requires that an icon be added also (we can use the symbolic default avatar icon). I think we used to have this in 3.2, actually...

Also, I'd suggest 'Select a Contact' for the string, rather than what's in the attached mockup.
