Description Fred Morcos 2012-02-29 16:22:54 UTC
At startup, GDM takes too long to show up, X starts and the cursor is visible, but GDM shows up several seconds later, in the meantime, constant disk access is happening (judging by the LED on my laptop with a normal "rotational" disk).

The same happens on another laptop with an SSD, albeit less time is spent on disk access, but nevertheless, GDM is the slowest component at startup.

It would be nice to have the username/password dialogs visible and responsive as soon as possible.

Works for me.
Could you please provide way more information and data about your system? Also see https://bugzilla.gnome.org/page.cgi?id=bug-writing.html
Comment 2 Fred Morcos 2012-02-29 18:41:35 UTC
Updated Importance to "Enhancement" since it is not really a "malfunction" of GDM.
Comment 3 Fred Morcos 2012-02-29 18:52:27 UTC
From when the mouse cursor is visible until the GDM dialog shows up, there's a delay of 10.87 seconds on the machine with a "rotational" disk.

Following is an hdparm read test:

$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads:   15874 MB in  2.00 seconds = 7946.24 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 254 MB in  3.01 seconds =  84.28 MB/sec

The processor is a quad-core Intel Core i7 Q740 at 1.73GHz but I doubt that is relevant since I think the bottleneck is disk reading (and/or writing? which wouldn't make much sense).
