Compared with other image viewers (like Shotwell Viewer, GPicView, and many more), EOG has an unsatisfactory interpolate ("Somooth images when zoomed-out") mode (see attached images).

(Furthermore I remarked quite a serious colour fault when displaying images with EOG. I'll fill a separate bug report.)

That's a limitation of a library we're currently using.
