GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 670231
gnome-shell freezes switching between workspaces when VMWare is running
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:35:24 UTC
This happens often but can't reproduce it at will. The mouse still moves, I can hear the audio from a video I was playing on a browser window. The problem appears to be related to the VMWare Player 4.0.x. I have not experienced the problem without the player running. I'm able to CTRL-ALT-F2, login as root and kill -9 the gnome-shell process which allows me to resume work where I left. My OS is Fedora 16 x86_64: gnome-shell-3.2.2.1-1.fc16.x86_64 kernel-3.2.3-2.fc16.x86_64

Are you able to reproduce the problem from bug 667865? There's also bug 665650, which mentions NVidia proprietary driver. Are you using this driver? Also, please attach the whole ~/.xsession-errors after the problem happens.
It looks a lot like bug 667865. However my VMware player doesn't become unstable. After I kill the gnome-shell process I'm able to resume work like nothing happened. I use the Intel Graphics HD 3000. It's part of the Core i7 chip, I have no graphics card on my motherboard. I will attach a segment of the .xsession-error after the problem happens.
Created attachment 207869 [details] .xsession-errors after the freeze occurs
If you give me instructions I can collect debugging information. Would an strace output be useful?
I ran an strace on the gnome-shell process, as it hung, and this is what I got: 13:44:39 futex(0x37f857c, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 1, NULL <unfinished ...>

Reopening as xsession-erros has been provided
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
