Bypassing the theme like this creates bad results. With current Adwaita, for
instance, the tints aren't visible on buttons in the normal state and it
totally messes up the button backgrounds on the backdrop state.

Thanks.  I don't want to get rid of the colouring but I can't see any method to make it work with the current GTK/themes.

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
