Description Guillaume Desmottes 2012-02-09 13:24:31 UTC
Now that we use gnome-contacts to display contact info (#669559) and link contacts (#669482) it would make my day to use it for the 'Edit' dialog as well: less code in Empathy, better UI and one less entry in the contact menu!

The Empathy edit dialog allow to change:

- The contact alias : gnome-contacts does it as well, no problem
- Tagging a contact as favorite: we can also do it by DnD contacts in the roster or use the context menu so that's fine.
- Setting contact's groups: this is the tricky one.

Users would still be able to assign contacts into groups by using DnD in the roster which is probably enough as groups are not that important than they use to be. The only feature we'd loose is the ability to create new groups.

I don't have a proper solution for this issue. Maybe a "add group" option somewhere would be enough, but where would we put it? I'd certainly prefer to avoid adding yet another entry in the roster menu bar. :\

So, my idea would be to override this onto the DND rearrangement, that when you reorder the buddy list an 'add to new group' target appears (location of this target to be decided, but probably an overlay at the bottom of the list) and the user can drop onto that to add it to a new group.

This fights menu creep and keeps all the group management features in the same place as well as making the DND stuff more expressive. Could be a win win.

If people like the sound of this I can work it up into some more comprehensive wireframes.

Sounds good to me. I was also thinking that hooking this in DnD would have been great.(In reply to comment #1)
