Description Simon 2012-02-01 22:55:04 UTC
When playing MP3s or MP3 streams with hebrew text in the id tags (like this one http://www.clickfm.co.il/ClickIsraeli.m3u) the content of the id tags is not shown correctly, but as unreadable text like "îé÷é âáøéàìåá åàï îøé ãåã - àåìé éâéò éåí".

My System is a Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid with Linux-Kernel 2.6.32-35-generic, Gnome 2.30.2 and Totem 2.30.2.

Because I don't know how to start apport manually to show some more information, I unfortunately can't provide them. If you need more information please ask!

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
However, you are using version 2.30.x which is too old and not supported anymore. GNOME developers are no longer working on that version, so unfortunately there will not be any bug fixes by GNOME developers for the version that you use.

By upgrading to a newer version of GNOME you could receive bug fixes and new functionality. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain a newer version of GNOME.

Please feel free to reopen this bug if the problem still occurs with a newer version of GNOME, or feel free to file a bug report in the bug tracking system of your distribution if your distribution still supports this version.
Comment 2 André Klapper 2012-02-02 05:55:43 UTC
Hmm. Seems to be still valid in 3.2 hence reopening.

Most likely the stream giving out garbage and expecting the client to be running in the correct encoding.

Passing on to GStreamer for checking.

You'll have to set either the GST_TAGA_ENCODING environment variable or the GST_ICY_TAG_ENCODING to "ISO-8859-8"

$ GST_ICY_TAG_ENCODING=ISO-8859-8 gst-launch-0.10 -t playbin2 uri=http://icecast.clickfm.co.il:8002/ClickIsraeli

I don't see a question in comment 4. Hence reverting NEEDINFO state.
Please don't set NEEDINFO if you didn't ask for more info.

> Please don't set NEEDINFO if you didn't ask for more info.

It seemed to me that the question was implicit: Does it work if you do that (set those environment variables)?

There isn't really much else we can do besides using current locale and/or those environment variables.

Applications like totem could offer to set this in their preferences tab, or it could be set system-wide in GNOME (there's a bug for that somewhere).

Resolving as NOTABUG. Feel free to re-open with more info if you have any ideas how we could do better here.
