GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 668930
Crash in magazine_chain_pop_head every 5 minutes with AMD Catalyst
Last modified: 2013-03-04 00:11:38 UTC
I'm not entirely sure how to do this, but I'll try my best to describe the problem. The general problem is that gnome-shell is crashing periodically whilst using it. It seems to do it when I hover over the "activities" button or when I'm in the activities interface. By crashes, I mean the whole interface disappears along with all my open applications. About 5 to 10 seconds later, everything returns as normal. I also have another issue whereby the gnome shell crashes, leaving all my applications visible, but I am unable to type in any application window. Last timme this happened, it caused a segfault: Jan 28 21:42:21 rymate-Aspire-5551 kernel: [38964.959537] gnome-shell[9134]: segfault at 2f89b5008 ip 00007fc7e9b180a8 sp 00007fffea359f00 error 4 in libglib-2.0.so.0.3000.0[7fc7e9ab8000+f4000] I have absolutely no idea what this means, I hope you lot can :) I'm running linux mint 12, all packages up to date, using the 12.1 AMD fglrx drivers. If any more information is needed from me, just say.
Please see https://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Debugging how to provide information. Did you file a bug report in Linux Mint's bug tracker?
> using the 12.1 AMD fglrx drivers. that is most likely the problem. I bet you will have no issues with the open-source radeon driver. I guess you hit https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=702257 I was hitting it on a 5-minute basis running fglrx. I rummaged through many fglrx-related gnome-shell bugs in GNOME bugzilla, but the latter issue does not seem to be reported upstream to GNOME yet. I will give the new 12.1 fglrx a try now. It seems many graphics corruption issues have been fixed by AMD https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=663155#c4
Actually, I was just searching the (inofficial) AMD bug tracker and found http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=408 It seems like this is the issue you are facing. Ryan, can you confirm that?

That is one of the bugs I am having, yes. But it doesn't explain my first issue, whereby the gnome shell crashes but then reappears, as that bug doesn't seem to have a segfault attached, and that bug seems to be caused by the activities button/menu
Ryan, you are describing two seperate issues (gnome shell restarting unsolicited and the sefgault). You should always file one report per issue. Besides, if you do not have theses issues using open-source graphics drivers, they are likely caused by AMD's fglrx. I have had your first issue (shell restarting, apps continue) with fglrx 11.12 as well, but they are now gone. I am running fglrx 12.1 since 24 hours and have not faced it yet.

Exactly the same problem in: -- https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=668800 (openSUSE 12.1+fglrx 12.1) -- https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=668930 (Linux mint 12+fglrx 12.1) -- https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=702257 (Fedora 15,16+fglrx 12.1) -- https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=663155#c4 (GNOME 3.2.X+FGLRX 12.1) -- http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=99 -- http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264 -- http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=283

P.s. We must send all of our bugs on ati bagtracker
As Milan already said: Alex: Please don't paste the same links in all Catalyst bugs you know of. These are not always the same problem. For example, the first series of bugs is about a crash, while the others are about image corruption.

This has been fixed a while ago.
