GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 668791
PDF created by evince unreadable in other pdf viewers
Last modified: 2012-05-23 20:36:48 UTC
Created attachment 206228 [details] The pdf that failed to open I used evince to fill out a pdf with fields. Once finished I saved a copy to give to another person, using windows, who was unable to open it in either Adobe's reader, Foxit, or the built-in pdf viewer in chrome. When attempted in chrome, he received the error message: "failed to load pdf document" Foxit returned: "format error: not a PDF or corrupted." Adobe returned: "THere was an error opening this document. THere was a problem reading this document (14)" Adobe Reader(For IE): Expected a dict object. C:\Users\Username\Downloads\xingkoma.pdf PDF opened fine in evince on both OSs. Attached is the PDF in question
which version of poppler are you using?
(In reply to comment #1) > which version of poppler are you using? 0.18.3
This bug is also apparent in earlier versions, please see downstream: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/897322 [PDF saved forms are not compatible with Adobe Reader] $ apt-cache policy evince libpoppler-glib6 libpoppler-glib6: Installed: 0.16.4-0ubuntu1.1 Candidate: 0.16.4-0ubuntu1.1 Version table: *** 0.16.4-0ubuntu1.1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-updates/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 0.16.4-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main i386 Packages evince: Installed: 2.32.0-0ubuntu12.4 Candidate: 2.32.0-0ubuntu12.4 Version table: *** 2.32.0-0ubuntu12.4 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-updates/main i386 Packages 500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-security/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 2.32.0-0ubuntu12 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main i386 Packages
Created attachment 214806 [details] US 1040 tax form saved with evince - fails to open in acroread Attached is a US tax form saved with evince. The resulting PDF fails to open in acroread (9.5-1), Adobe Reader (Windows), and Adobe Acrobat (Windows).
Can you test with newer poppler? I am almost sure this was a poppler bug fixed on time for 0.18, and if not, it should be for sure fixed in 0.20
Created attachment 214807 [details] okular file with same issue Note that Okular has exactly the same problem. Attached is the same US tax form 1040 saved from Okular 4:4.6.5-0ubuntu1.1. Common component between Evince and Okular is poppler?
@Jose: Yes. I can test with libpoppler-glib8 (0.18.4-1ubuntu2) & Evince 3.4.0-0ubuntu1. I'll post back when done.
Yeah, this is a bug in poppler... I havent forwarded the bug to freedesktop since I believe it is already known and fixed (and I can't find the proper bug number in freedesktop's bugzilla)
Created attachment 214808 [details] US 1040 tax form saved poppler 0.18 Here is the US 1040 tax form using Evince 3.4.0 and libpoppler-glib8 (0.18.4). Same issue as previous (cannot open in acroread etc).
Found the poppler bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49080 [Bug 49080 - PDF file modified by poppler is not compatible with acroread] Status: RESOLVED FIXED From comment #3 Fixed in 0.19.4 (commit b1d5c6c0a20a4a24b42de66db23e0f63d10ca52d) I do not have anything above 0.18 at the moment.
So thanks for finding the link. Resolving not gnome. Please comment further on the poppler bug if you still have the issue with newer poppler.
No problem & thanks for the quick response.
