Description Vincent Untz 2012-01-20 13:42:48 UTC
Using gnome-contacts 3.3.3 with folks 0.6.6.

By default, I can see four contacts in the left pane. Three of those are in eds (displayed in evo), and the fourth one is, afaik, coming from telepathy.

If I type a letter in the search entry ("f"), I suddenly see many more contacts -- all coming from telepathy.
Comment 1 Vincent Untz 2012-01-20 13:43:51 UTC
Ah, they appear under a "Other contacts" heading.

So I guess it's by design. But I find it extremely confusing.

Yeah, isn't the point of Contacts to offer an unified view of all the contacts from different sources?

Contacts is your address book, with extra smarts to automagically pull in additional information.

If your address book is empty, you should see an option to populate it or to switch address books:

If contacts hasn't picked up an online contacts service, it should ask you what to do:

Allan, what about the usecase of adding details (say, email) to an existing (telepathy) contact?

As far as I understand, current workflow is suboptimal:
 - add new (empty) contact,
 - right click in the contact view,
 - "Add/Remove Linked Contacts...

The easiest way to do that would be to create a new contact and add the email address there. You would hopefully then get a suggestion to link the telepathy contact.

The alternative would be to find the telepathy contact, click the link button, and then create a new contact to link it to.

An easier way to do that could be to offer the ability to add details to the telepathy contact and then add it to my contacts if that happens, I suppose.

The optimal way of doing that would be implementing the "Add to My Contacts" functionality. That would make a new contact in your primary store with the data and link the telepathy contact to it.

Yes that's an option.
Comment 8 Alexander Larsson 2012-02-16 13:19:32 UTC
I added a "Add to My Contacts" button, similar to the existing "Unlink" buttons.
Comment 9 Marius Gedminas 2013-12-30 12:00:50 UTC
I can't find an "Add to My Contacts" button in Contacts 3.8.3 anywhere. What am I missing?
