Description Tobias Wolf 2012-01-18 12:59:48 UTC
I like my eog clean. Just the image, no toolbar, no status bar, no sidebar, no gallery.

The sidebar always opens now.
Comment 1 Felix Riemann 2012-01-18 15:11:48 UTC
There was an unwanted update of the preferences key once the sidebar's visibility changed.

    Don't force-enable the sidebar on startup once a page is added

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
Comment 2 Tobias Wolf 2012-01-18 15:22:09 UTC
Thanks, Felix.

The sidebar could also be hig-ified. And it's weird that there's still a dialog with properties and now a sidebar with properties.

Wasn't the properties dialog introduced because you didn't want a sidebar? i.e., there was a sidebar before, then none, now it's back
Comment 3 Felix Riemann 2012-01-18 16:14:26 UTC
The re-instated sidebar that is in the current 3.3.x releases definitely needs improvement. It actually is a work in progress item I already added to the releases to possibly cause some feedback (considering my rather slow development speed lately). It came back as it was one of the more often heard requests. Theoretically it also improves the connection of the metadata to the image (which was not that obvious with the dialog. The biggest problem with the old sidebar was that it was way to cluttered due to the excessive amounts of data displayed.
The new sidebar has similar problems though.

See also bug 616438.

The dialog is still in as it has other advantages compared to the sidebar, e.g. it allows to move the metadata to a second monitor while viewing the image on another display.

False alarm, Ubuntu "fixed" this as follows, they didn’t get the proper fix from git:

$ head changelog
eog (3.3.4-0ubuntu2) precise; urgency=low

  * debian/eog.gsettings-override:
    - don't display the sidebar by default (lp: #923708)

eog (3.3.4-0ubuntu1) precise; urgency=low

  * New upstream version

$ cat eog.gsettings-override
[org.gnome.eog.ui]
external-editor="shotwell-viewer.desktop"
sidebar=false
