What's the point of this? Speed-ups? I think I tend to care more about unnecessary clutter and maintainability than configure performance, so leaning towards WONTFIXing this if there isn't more to it.

It's not speedup, but possible conflicting defines set in CPPFLAGS (or others). That said, I agree that it's a corner case and maintainability is indeed more important. Scratch it.
