GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 667146
Ctrl-Delete and Shift-Delete make it very easy to accidentily delete a file instead of moving it the trash
Last modified: 2012-02-20 16:46:26 UTC
After the change from Delete to Ctrl-Delete it is MUCH easier to accidentily delete a file instead of moving it the trash. Previously it was easy: Hit Delete and the file is (safely) deleted. If I am absolutely sure I don't need that file anymore, I had to press a modifier. Now I am forced to press a modifier always when disposing files. And due to the proximity of the shift and ctrl modifiers it is very easy to mix them up and the file is gone forever without the possibility to get it (easily) back :( The use case is even worse if you opt NOT to show a confirmation dialog, but even with a dialog most users just hit Enter anyway to dismiss the dialog. Therefore, due to the possiblitiy of data loss I opt to change the shortcut back to Delete. Another solution which could work would be this: Pressing Ctrl-Delete always moves the file to trash WITHOUT a confirmation dialog. And pressing Shift-Delete gives you a confirmation dialog, so you have a real chance of detecting that you permanently delete a file.
While I agree, I think this is a duplicate of bug 648658.
