GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 666738
Make option to hide name from user menu
Last modified: 2012-04-03 12:54:38 UTC
The user menu shows my name. But I already know my name, so all it does is steal valuable space and add clutter making the user menu much more wider than other icons. I would like an option to hide the name from the user menu so that it only shows the icon.
Yes, this was my first thought as well. But then my "significant other" suggested that when I'm logged in, her name should be displayed instead! (Personal opinion: Showing ones name in the panel does not serve any obvious purpose. If somebody wants it, they can develop an extension.)
We do this in gnome-panel by default to mimic the gnome-shell experience. If you don't want this, just remove the applet. So unless this changes in gnome-shell, we won't change it in gnome-panel. Note that it's possible to write another applet doing the same thing without the name...
It would be nice with a setting that can be set via gsettings. Then you can mimic gnome-shell experience by default, but users who don't want the visual clutter of valuable screen space can disable the name from showing.
Also, I would like to get rid of the name fron gnome-shell too.
Please file a bug against gnome-shell, in that case. And then gnome-panel can respect this setting too.
Btw. is there any documentation explaining why the name is displayed in the first place? I can see no reason to show it, but surely there is some purpose in it?
You'd need to ask the design team, I don't know the reason. I guess it might be related to the "multiple users on one computer" case.
