Description lists 2011-11-26 08:56:38 UTC
Hello,

I use GnuCash for personal finances and think it is incredibly powerful (though not, in my view, as pretty as MS Money was when I used that a decade ago).

At the moment I use a spreadsheet in combination with GnuCash to do everything that I need. I would ideally have all the things that I use the spreadsheet for in GnuCash so that I could abandon the spreadsheet.

The main thing that I use the spreadsheet for is to show (through a table and a graph) how our net asset position is improving over time, at fortnightly intervals after we are paid.

It would be brilliant if there was a report in GnuCash that showed this information. Then I could just make sure that GnuCash was up-to-date as at that point and see the same information that I currently have in the spreadsheet. My main priority is a line graph showing the change in that net asset position over time. It is also important to me that I can see the numbers at those historical dates.

Keep up the great work and thank you!!!

It might be worth posting this request on the users mailing list "gnucash-user@gnucash.org" . Someone may already have done this, or something similar, and may be willing to donate their report.

I'm marking this as an enhancement.

I've derived a linechart from the barchart reports. I've not added to it GnuCash yet as I'd like someone (you?) to test drive it and give me some feedback.

Since you're a Linux user, I've uploaded it GitHub for download and testing. Read the INSTALL file as to how to.

The URL is:

Feedback should be via bugzilla.

Committed line chart report to trunk and will be on next 2.4 release.

That's absolutely awesome, thank you!!! It is times like this that I love Free software--what a turnaround time!

I've tested it and it is exactly what I'm looking for, thank you. I didn't realise that you could even do custom reports like that!

I've checked and it matches my line graph.

Is there any way that you could please add another option to not show the legend/key? As I've turned off Assets and Liabilities, only Net Assets is shown and a legend is unnecessary (and takes up a lot of room because of the large font size). I tried to see where it was in the report code, but failed. I'm happy to open another bug if it is hard.

It would also be brilliant if the Y axis of the line graph only showed the range of values on the graph rounded up to the nearest $5k. For example, if all of your net asset values during the period were between $92,000 and $124,000, the graph should start at $90,000 and go to $125,000 (or maybe +- $10k instead). Otherwise the graph can look very flat if the numbers are high but the variance is small. Again, please let me know if I should file this separately.

The text in the labels around the sides also seems very large and I can't seem to change it with reducing the size in the Stylesheet preferences, or in the report options. I mention this in case it is a property of the report that you just made, but tell me if it is some general issue and I should report it somewhere else.

Thank you so much for your help!
