Note that much of the work took place outside of this bug in separately-filed bugs and commits required to address this bug. Having done so....

I'm not quite ready to close this one as FIXED because I want to do some additional testing, look at other object types, etc.

Tested quite a bit. Seems to be working. If new issues are found, new bugs should be opened for those issues.
