this report has been filed here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/882307

"When renaming a file in nautilus, in list view, if you copy the highlighted part of the name, after this you're unable to copy/paste files
This only occurs in list view

Steps to reproduce:
- Open Nautilus
- Chose List View
- Right click a file and chose Rename. Nautilus will highlight the file name.
- Now Right click again on the highlighted part of the name and chose Copy.
- Press Esc
- Now try copying a file, you will be able to chose the option "Copy", but when you try to Paste, nothing happens."

I can't reproduce this bug here with the steps provided, neither on Fedora 16 (which ships 3.2.1) nor with git master.
Any other hint on how to reproduce this?

http://people.gnome.org/~cosimoc/nautilus-rename.ogv has a video of my failed attempt to reproduce this bug.
Am I missing some step?

Hi, I filed the original bug report in launchpad.

You're reproducing the steps correctly. Since you did it in Fedora 16 I'm guessing it's something in the Ubuntu causing the bug?

Just to be sure I reproduced the exact same steps you did in your video in Ubuntu and again I was unable to copy/paste files after that.

Cheers,
Joao

It happens as well with 3.3.4 built from the upstream tarball without patch

Could it be something similar to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=662591 which happens to work under gnome-shell but could be an issue under other wms? Btw that bug has a patch waiting for review which is shipped in Ubuntu for a while and fixing the issues described on the other bug

Still can't reproduce this. Is this still an issue in master?
Comment 6 Cosimo Cecchi 2012-10-04 17:09:29 UTC
I think this can be closed as OBSOLETE, as comments on the Launchpad bug suggest this is not reproducible anymore.

This issue is affecting Debian Wheezy beta #4 (gnome 3.4.2). The context menus in nautilus are sometimes grayed out although they're available and viable options.

I see this bug most often when selecting Paste, Move to > other pane, Copy to > other pane.

Is this a duplicate of Bug 672046?
