GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 663835
Application names are ellipsized in app menu and in search results
Last modified: 2011-11-13 18:06:09 UTC
Hello, When I search an application by typing its name in the activities menu, there is a description under each icon. But this one is often truncated (e.g.:"Applications au dé…" which stands for "Applications au démarrage" - "Startup Applications" in English). I know that English names for apps are more concise. But French, and many other languages, often use more than two or three words to describe the applications, and often need a second line to fully display it. As there is many unused vertical space between icons, couldn't it be used to display the apps full names (always displayed, or on mouse over and keyboard selection)? Thanks.
I can confirm there are about 5 default GNOME programs that suffer from this problem in French, and even more if you include Fedora programs (Baobab, gnome-search-tool, Vinagre, Seahorse, Evolution preferences, PackageKit-gnome, ABRT-gui, tracker-needle). Other languages are likely to be affected, since English is a particularly concise language.
