GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 663059
Port deskbar-applet to Gtk3 and GNOME 3
Last modified: 2011-11-05 22:08:13 UTC
Deskbar was available in GNOME 2.x, and it was a extensible applet with huge potential. Port it to Gtk3 and GNOME 3.
[Changing severity as https://bugzilla.gnome.org/page.cgi?id=fields.html#importance ] As far as I know deskbar-applet is not under developed anymore, so there are no plans for a port. Plus there is currently no concept for applets in GNOME3. As it is open-source, anybody could take the code form git.gnome.org and continue developing it, though.
I thought GNOME 3 had applets too, it doesn't? I use gnome-panel and would like to use applets. Maybe could be useful with Unity too and other stuff. Just port it to Gtk3.
(In reply to comment #2) > Just port it to Gtk3. Just to set expectations straight, quoting from https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html which potentially answers this quite well: »»No obligation. "Open Source" is not the same as "the developers must do my bidding." Everyone here wants to help, but the only person who has any obligation to fix the bugs you want fixed is you. Therefore, you should not act as if you expect someone to fix a bug by a particular date or release. Aggressive or repeated demands will not be received well and will almost certainly diminish the impact and interest in your suggestions.««
Sorry, I did not mean to sound aggressive. I kindly would like to put out a humble request to please port this very useful applet with huge potential to Gtk3. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=638117
To make things more clear, the deskbar applet was never part of the gnome-applets project. And the sources moved into the archive. They can be found here: http://git.gnome.org/browse/archive/deskbar-applet/ It's a pitty that there is no concept for applets in Gnome3, since gnome-applets have been ported to Gtk3 in many hours of hard work.
