Description Don Crowder 2011-10-28 23:42:45 UTC
Any time Gedit is invoked, via any means, an Untitled Document is opened and, whether or not that document is modified, closing it requires confirmation.

For example: If I right click on a document from my file manager and select "Open with Gedit" the document is opened and an Untitled Document is also opened on another tab.

When I double-click on a document for which gedit is the default editor the document opens and an Untitled Document opens alongside it.

If I attempt to simply close the Untitled Document I'm prompted to save it.

Gedit has been my default editor for quite some time now but I've just recently switched from Debian stable to Kubuntu 11.10. I honestly don't recall which version of Gedit I was using in Debian but I distinctly recall that when I opened a document in gedit, from the file manager, the only document which opened was the document I selected.

I cannot reproduce here when double clicking on a file in nautilus. I wonder if the KDE file manager is doing something special.

Anyway gedit's code explicitely handle this case, so this seems an integration bug, maybe due to some kubuntu patch. I suggest you report the bug to kubuntu.

When I reported this glitch I was using Kubuntu 11.10 on a dual core 64 bit machine. Since then I've switched to a 32 bit P4 machine, also using Kubuntu 11.10, but I still have the same problem. My wife's machine is using Kubuntu 11.04 and doesn't have the problem.

Whether I open a text file by double clicking (I've designated gedit as my default text editor) or use right click and 'Open with' the file I've selected opens along with an untitled document.

In addition, if I have a text file open in gedit and double click on another text file, in my file manager, that file opens along with TWO numbered, untitled documents. If I close both untitled documents, leaving two text files open, and double click on a third text file it's opened along with two more untitled documents.

If I could just close them and move on it wouldn't be so trouble some but a confirmation dialogue is required to close each and every Untitled Document.

This is very frustrating.
