Interface for on-line translation

Hello CLaude, I think it would be nice if we could make suggestions on-line for the po file when they are only "few" messages to "unfuzzy" or to translate (for example less than 20 or 15). 1) It is time consuming to download the file, open it, modify it, download again... for only few messages. 2) We have to download the file and open it, just to see the messages that have to be translated and know if we are able to translate them 3) Anybody could make suggestions Let's say for example that "committers" and "reviewers" can approve the suggestions or not and committers can change these approvals (after discussion with the person who approved) before committing. Hope I am clear. My question are : your opinion on that ? do you think it is feasible (I or someone else could help) ? Of course we have to think harder on the way to implement that on the ui and to define more precisely the functionality. Bruno
Hi Bruno, I see your concerns. But such a development would lead DL to a new domain of functionality which is already implemented by existing tools. When I think about it, I would be more inclined to couple DL with another tool (Pootle comes to my mind), DL -vertimus External tool Button "Edit in online editor" | file sent to editor ----------------------->----------------------- vertimus page locked in DL | User edit online | Button "Get from online editor" --------------------------<--------------------- | file is attached as "Translated" That is, at each step of the workflow, the translator/reviewer can choose if he wants to work at the po file level or in an online tool. The advantage of such a solution is that we reuse existing work instead of reinventing the wheel, the downside is that integration work might be hard and we have another tool to host and maintain.

One other way we could try (without the heavy work on the integration of an external tool) is to extract untranslated and fuzzy strings from the po file, and allow the user to copy this extract to the comment textarea, so he can suggests translation through the comment form. The downside is that the reviewer has then to manually merge the proposals in the complete po file. It might be OK for <10 strings, but not for a larger number of strings.
The extraction of messages and header is very easy with msgattrib command. (if we don't care about sorting messages using po file order.) We could have, fuzzy message first, then untranslated message. We could have a new command like "Overview of the messages" ONLY when there is less than, let's say 10 fuzzy and/or 10 untranslated messages. The translator modify the messages that appear in the "comment" box (with "It's All Text", it is very easy) then click on "Submit" to send his work or "Undo the last action" if it don't know how to translate. It create a suggestion.po file which is automatically merged by vertimus. The reviewer can verify with the diff button and do some modifications if necessary. It would be very nice if vertimus do an automatic git commit and push, but wait... For me the real interest for translators is to have an overview of the messages without having to download the file, open it, search for untranslated and fuzzys, modify them, save and upload. Bruno

OTOH, just as Claude said, having an on-line translation tool would mean putting D-L into something else, which I would not like to. The downside of on-line translations is that you are completely out of context, you usually are not able to navigate back and forth on the module to see what's the context, the order of translations is altered, etc etc... I also seen that by downloading and marking as "being translated" by someone, this person feels a bit of ownership and tries to translate all the file instead of just random strings from here and there, which then renders the translations with a lot of inconsistencies...
